This research was with people who had overcome their drug addiction usually after many years of dependency. Careful analysis of their accounts on the processes of recovery provided insights into some of the key factors influencing successful recovery, particularly around the restitution or creation of positive non addict identity. That research was published in the 2001 book “Beating the Dragon” by James McIntosh and Neil McKeganey and remains influential to this day.
